Everyone knows Viktor Gyokeres has not had the best start at Arsenal so far. He has missed time due to injury, and has also missed the opportunity to gel with his new teammates as well as he would have wanted to.

However, the big-money move from Sporting to Arsenal was never going to be easy anyway, was it?

Gyokeres left the league where he scored goals left, right and center, to join the most competitive league in the world at the moment.

Everyone knows he has the talent and ability to succeed, all it takes is some time to adapt to the new league and start scoring goals.

Jamie Carragher's bizarre Viktor Gyokeres claim makes little sense

Jamie Carragher is of a different opinion, though. Carragher had two takes in a recent clip, where he talked about Arsenal's best striker at this given moment, as well as whether Arsenal have any world class strikers at all.

This is what the former Liverpool defender had to say. He said: “Merino, right now, I actually think is first choice. I know Gyokeres played at the weekend, I think that was down to the fact he’d just come back from injury, he needed a game and it was also Wolves at home.

“Merino has been fantastic getting goals in that position, but almost like a false nine. Kai Havertz is almost another version of that.

“You’ve got a bit of variety there with a really good striker, a goalscorer and players who play the false nine position. I actually think they’re going to need all four to go on to win the title, I don’t think any of them are the guy who is this world-class striker Arsenal have been after.”

Now, one of Carragher's takes actually makes sense. Whether you agree with it or not is a different story altogether, but it does make sense.

Mikel Merino is currently the fitter, more in rhythm option at striker who has played with this bunch for a lot longer than Gyokeres has.

However, to say Gyokeres is not a world class striker is a little extreme. He has not been world-class this season, but we are talking about a guy who scored the most goals out of anyone in the entirety of Europe last season.

The counter-argument to that is always the level of the league. In some ways, it is true, but he also did it in the Champions League, where he had six goals in eight appearances. Not shabby at all.

Scoring 54 goals in 52 games in any league is very difficult, and Gyokeres actually did it at a league that has some really good teams who are constantly in European competitions.

Gyokeres was signed by Arsenal because he is a world-class goal scorer. He may not be performing at that level right now, but he definitely is.
