Jurriën Timber has been absent with injury for almost two months and as he faces a race against time to return to fitness, his dream of going to the World Cup is hanging by a thread.

The Arsenal right back has been unavailable since he was forced off in the first half of a 2-0 win over Everton in mid-March and he has shown no signs of making a comeback any time soon.

His return would be very welcomed by the Gunners with two huge games remaining in the Premier League title race and the Champions League final approaching, but the likelihood of Timber returning in time for those or the World Cup is looking slim.

Having been withdrawn before half-time against Everton, Timber has now missed Arsenal's last 12 games, including the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City and the Champions League semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid.

Mikel Arteta admitted that the injury has proved to be complicated and there is a fear he may not feature for the Gunners before the end of the season.

That comes as bad news for both Arsenal and Timber himself, with a crucial set of games approaching over the coming weeks. Having missed practically the entire run-in, the defender will be keen to at least be fit for the Champions League final, but that looks unlikely.

His return would be a great help following the news that Ben White is expected to miss the rest of the season after picking up an injury in the win at West Ham on Sunday. That leaves Arteta without a genuine right back option for the final three games, with Cristhian Mosquera the most likely to stand in.

One huge opportunity that could be missed for Timber though is making it to the World Cup with the Netherlands. If he isn't fit to end the season with Arsenal, his lack of game time may prevent him from making the final squad.

Having earned 23 caps for his home nation, Timber would have been a shoo-in for the squad, having gone to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, where he played in four out of five of their matches, including the full 120 minutes of their penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the quarter-finals.

However, it's now looking unlikely that he will recover in time to be part of the squad, or at least part of the first choice side so it's safe to say his World Cup dream is hanging by a thread.
