Saturday's loss against Aston Villa was painful, and it wasn't just because of Emi Buendia's last kick of the game, resulting in three points lost. For Arsenal, the title contenders, there is little difference between two points vs three points being lost. Truth be told, a draw would have been just as disappointing.
However, Arsenal can't claim to be hard-done-by. They deserved to lose that match, as the performance justified nothing more. Aston Villa were the better team, and they made Arsenal look like the fourth-placed team they were many seasons ago.
Matty Cash opened the scoring for Aston Villa, and he was their main threat bombing forward. There were a few instances where he caused trouble for Arsenal, and this was strategically planned all along.
Matty Cash just exposed two Arsenal players for not doing their jobs
Speaking after the game, Matty Cash revealed just how strategically Unai Emery had set Aston Villa up to exploit the left-hand side of Arsenal's defense. The Poland international said that it was on him to bombard Arsenal and overlap this side of their defense, with McGinn pulling inside.
In his own words, Cash said: “It’s what we spoke about, to be fair. In the first half as well, having John (McGinn) a little bit more inside and then me on the overlap."
This was a tactical shift from the former Arsenal boss Unai Emery that current boss Mikel Arteta was not prepared for. On a few occasions, Riccardo Calafiori was pulled out of position, and this left empty space for Matty Cash to bomb into.
While it worked for Aston Villa, the main telling point was how badly it exposed Arsenal's flaws. The left-hand side for Arsenal was the worst it had been in a long time.
Eberechi Eze had his worst game in an Arsenal jersey, and Riccardo Calafiori had his worst of the season so far. It's no surprise that both players were taken off prematurely.
Leandro Trossard played far better for Arsenal than Eze, and Myles Lewis-Skelly proved he can still compete in the Arsenal team by replacing Calafiori.
Arsenal's defense has been bulletproof for most of the season, but over the weekend, it was rather painful to watch. The one silver lining for the Gunners is that William Saliba shouldn't be too far away from returning.
