Arsenal have now entered the most nervy stage of their Premier League title bid after losing to rivals Manchester City on Sunday. Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal to ensure City and Arsenal both have the title in their hands going into the remaining fixtures.
The Gunners have a three-point lead with five games left, but they have played a game more, so if City win their game in-hand, it will be down to goal difference, which currently favours Arsenal by one goal, so City are on course to be level or ahead on goal difference as things stand, given they have that extra game to play.
Arsenal have amassed an unwanted reputation of being the bridesmaids in recent years, consistently coming up short despite being involved in the title race. Given how their lead at the top has now collapsed, there are now huge fears that the Gunners will come up short again, even if they do still have every chance of outrunning City.
Mikel Arteta is frustrated in the same way Arsenal fans are
Though, if it does come down to goal difference, Arsenal may not be all that confident, given they are clearly having trouble scoring goals. Arteta's men have scored just four goals in their last five games, while City are finding things a lot easier in front of goal.
Arsenal had the chances against their title rivals on Sunday, too, with Eberechi Eze hitting the post with a superb efforts, and that came just after Kai Havertz missed a huge one-on-one opportunity.
Those sorts of missed chances have left Arsenal fans frustrated in recent weeks, and Arteta acknowledged the issue after the City defeat. He said: "When you have so many open chances like we did against them, you have to put the ball in the back of the net and get away with the three points”
Asked about the goal difference race, Arteta added: "Let's see what happens. It's the Premier League. First of all, to win a game in this league, it's extremely tough. I mean, the fixtures that we both have, it's going to be tough for both of them. You know, we would have already 80 points or 85 points like happened in other seasons. This is not the case. We will prepare game by game and learn from what happened today and do better."
Arsenal are next in action against Newcastle United at home on Saturday, while City face Burnley on Wednesday in advance of their FA Cup semi-final this weekend.
