Mikel Arteta reveals he could try out Eberechi Eze on the left wing more often than he has so far in the Englishman's first season at Arsenal.
Eze has been a topic of conversation for a very long time - perhaps as long as he has been at the club. He has played exceptionally well in some games, but in most of the other games, he has looked mediocre at best, not scoring or being consistent enough on the pitch.
That is something Eze is going to have to try to change as soon as possible if he wants to keep his place in the starting XI after Martin Odegaard comes back to the squad.
Arteta was asked about this, actually, at the press conference. He talked about how he played Eze on the left wing for a short period of time, and that is an experiment he could come back to once enough midfielders return from injury.
Mikel Arteta leaves the door open for Eberechi Eze's positional switch
He said: "There is a possibility to do that, for sure. I think we only did it once, and it was for a short period of time because Martin had a shoulder injury.
"As well, obviously, because we had players out, now in midfield. Martin was out, Mikel [Merino] was out, Kai [Havertz] was out as well. Ethan [Nwaneri] was sent on loan so we had less options and that's the reason as well that he's been playing more regularly now."
That is definitely something Arsenal fans must be waiting for. It could be a hit or miss, especially with consistent output from the combination of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, but also because of the inconsistency of Eze so far.
However, it could also work out really well. Eze is a versatile player who can thrive in multiple systems, and having him play on the left, with his dribbling skills, could turn out to be a very good idea.
If the brace against Tottenham last Sunday brings in enough confidence in Eze to be able to be himself again, the Englishman may also be able to perform well on the left. His connection with Piero Hincapie on the left could also work out really well for the club, and Arteta even discussed that in the presser.
He said: "It's a combination that we can do. When we talk about connection, that's a connection that I think will work really well, especially against a certain type of opponent. So that's another option that we have."
It remains to be seen when this will actually be used. Right now, there are a few midfielders who have not been playing that much, so Eze will be asked to stay in the midfield for now.
However, once everyone is fit again, this would be an interesting case to follow.
