Mikel Arteta has confirmed Christos Tzolis is set for a spell on the sidelines after he picked up an injury while on international duty with Greece.
The Spaniard confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal's clash with Leeds United that the Greek winger will be unavailable for selection and will miss a few weeks of action.
It was the update that fans dreaded after reports first arose regarding Tzolis' fitness during his time with the EURO 2004 champions and Arteta's latest words have confirmed that supporters were right to be worried.
Christos Tzolis set to miss "a few weeks" of action for Arsenal
When quizzed about the winger's availability ahead of the clash with Leeds, Arteta said: "Tzolis has a muscle injury as he's going to be out for a few weeks."
Tzolis was not the only Arsenal player to withdraw from international duty with Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa also doing so, but the Gunners boss confirmed that the Greek suffered the worst with his teammates getting off slightly easier.
Asked about Rice's fitness, Arteta said: "Yeah, we have to manage him because he's had a few issues since he came back from the World Cup. Hopefully tomorrow he's available and some others also are in doubt."
Havertz and Konsa are slightly less likely to return from their issues with the Spaniard confirming he will have to see regarding their availability tomorrow saying "With Kai as he had a muscular injury, I spoke to Germany and they sent the player back as normal, Ezri we had good communication with the England camp."
Also questioned on Max Dowman's injury after he withdrew from the England Under-19s squad, Arteta confirmed the youngster will be available to face Leeds.
With Tzolis expected to miss the most significant amount of time in comparison to his teammates, his injury update confirms fans' fears and leaves Arteta very short of options on the left wing. Eberechi Eze is likely to fill in for his Greek counterpart on the flank, but as a natural number 10, he may struggle to make an impact. His start to the season has been well below par with many feeling he isn't up to the standard required to offer Arsenal world class output on the left side.
Along with Saturday's meeting with Leeds, Tzolis could now miss meetings with Lille, Nottingham Forest, Bayern Munich, Everton and Fleetwood Town, and will be hoping to make his comeback in time to face Liverpool on 1 November.
