Mikel Arteta clarified that despite having the upper hand over Chelsea in the last few games, Arsenal will have to bring their best to win at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
Arsenal bounced back from their draw against Wolves in the best possible way - with a 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at their own stadium - and now have the chance to strengthen their position as the best team in the league when they face Chelsea at home.
Arsenal have enjoyed a period of underrated dominance over Chelsea in the last few games, as they have not lost any of the last 10 games between the two sides.
The last time Arsenal lost to Chelsea was in 2021 at the Emirates Stadium, and that was a very different Arsenal to the one that would take the center stage on Sunday.
Their last 10 games include seven wins for Arsenal, and the remaining three were draws.
Mikel Arteta refuses to rely on past results against Chelsea
This season, Arsenal and Chelsea have faced each other three times, with two of them being wins for Arsenal. Their first meeting of the season - the league game at Stamford Bridge - ended 1-1.
Despite the period of dominance, Arteta refuses to be complacent and understands the need to prepare as well as possible before a game as big as this.
He said: "[The record] doesn’t change the preparation. We know the importance of the game, and we know the team we’re going to have in front of us.
"We just have to prepare in the best way to have the right to win it. As I always say, there’s nothing else you can do. What we did two weeks or two years ago is irrelevant.
"Every game and context is different, because the players might change, the mood of the teams can be in a different state, or what is at stake is different, and we’re prepared."
That is the mentality that Arsenal need to have at all costs. The Gunners are challenging for the league title, and they cannot let complacency run them into the ground.
This is going to be a huge game. Chelsea are a really talented and dangerous side, and irrespective of the last 10 results against them, they will bring their best to the Emirates, and so should Arsenal.
Arsenal have led the Premier League for such a long time, and they cannot afford to slip up now. A big performance is an absolute must, not just for the title, but also for their own morale.
