Arsenal has the best left-back pairing in the world. Nobody would have taken that sentence seriously last year.
Arsenal is living lavish right now, and it's easy to see why. They didn't just beat Atlético Madrid, a team they were knocked out of the Europa League by a few years ago and only recently humiliated Real Madrid in the Madrid Derby; they humiliated Atlético, instead.
A scoreline of Arsenal 4-0 Atlético is not a misrepresentation. In fact, Arsenal could have probably scored more. Arsenal took a whopping 19 shots, one of them taken by Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Myles Lewis-Skelly got his second Champions League start of the season, affording some more rest to Riccardo Calafiori.
Myles Lewis-Skelly has flipped this Arsenal narrative completely
Myles Lewis-Skelly was one of the busiest players on the pitch for Arsenal, giving yet another selection headache to Mikel Arteta.
It is difficult, almost impossible, for Mikel Arteta to justify benching one of Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Both of them are among Arsenal's best players, so in an ideal world, Arteta would be able to use them both in the starting lineup.
But that's just not possible, which is one of the best problems for Arteta to have.
In Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori, Arsenal has easily the best left-back pairing in the world. Both players could start for most clubs in Europe, and that's not an exaggeration.
If you were to tell Arsenal fans that they would need to pick between two top-quality left-backs in the starting XI this time last year, your arm would have been gnawed off.
Last year, Calafiori was still yet to pick out his best position, and Lewis-Skelly was still planning his Arsenal breakthrough. Now, they are both established as top quality left-backs.
Arsenal's best quality this season has been their depth. With injuries to key players, you would never be able to tell, given how well Arteta has rotated his squad.
This is widely documented, but it's not been spoken about enough how well Arteta has maintained the left-back slot.
Arsenal is top of the Premier League table and third in the Champions League table. They are heavy contenders to win not just one, but both. What a season that would be.
Despite their great form, one of their best players last season, Myles Lewis-Skelly, barely gets a look in. And that's through absolutely no fault of his own.
Long may this encouraging trend continue. The more healthy competition Arsenal can get, the better.
