Former goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel heaped a lot of praise on Eberechi Eze after his performance for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur in their 4-1 win on Sunday.
It was an admirable performance against Arsenal's biggest rivals, where Eze scored two really important goals in their win over a team who are struggling in the second half of the table. His first goal was a really well-taken volley, and his second goal was also made of the same cloth.
Even if his goals are disregarded, the way he was moving around on the pitch made it seem like it was a really good performance from the Englishman and Arsenal reaped the rewards.
After the game, Schmeichel talked about Eze's performance and the kind of player that he is and he only had good things to say.
Peter Schmeichel points to Arsenal truth about Eberechi Eze
He said: “Eberechi is such an elegant player. He’s actually a really beautiful player to watch. He’s one of those players that you want to pay to come and watch him play. Arsenal haven’t got many of those players, but him, it’s brilliant when he’s on that kind of form.”
To be absolutely fair, Schmeichel is correct in his statement. When he is on form, he is a joy to watch, and he is the kind of player that people pay money for just to watch him play live.
However, the very important part of that sentence is when he is on form. He has looked really good in some games, but there have been some games where Eze has been subpar at best.
Arsenal need him to be performing closer to the level that he showed against Tottenham on Sunday in as many games as possible because it completely improves their ceiling as a football team because of what Eze provides on the pitch.
Schmeichel says there are not that many players on this Arsenal team that are of the same quality and elegance as Eze is. So when he performs as well as he did, it puts Arsenal in a much, much better position than when he does not perform as well or when he does not play at all.
Eze's main battle right now is consistency, and once he is able to get that together, it will completely transform this team's attack, which is the biggest struggle for Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff at the moment.
Things need to change for that to happen, and Eze's form, if it improves after such a brilliant match against Spurs, will pull this team together and hopefully make them bigger contenders for every single competition that they are in.
