Negative #2: Arsenal didn't create enough chances

Despite having so much possession, Arsenal failed to create enough clear cut chances. After looking very bright early-on and threatening to steamroll Port Vale, Nwaneri in particular went very quiet.

For all of their intricate short passing, they couldn't find a way to unlock Port Vale's stubborn defence and runners from deep were in short supply.

Once Gyökeres came on with quarter of an hour left, the Gunners played more diectly and used the full length and width of the pitch. As a result, they managed to get the Swede in on goal when Max Dowman, on as substitute, spotted his run from deep. Although Gyökeres couldn't get his shot away quickly enough, the difference in style was stark.

It was no surprise then that Arsenal's second goal came after Saliba's long ball found Leandro Trossard 20 yards out from goal and the Belgian finished with a low and powerful shot.

Positive #3: Max Dowman got a run out

Accompanied by Port Vale chants of “you've got school in the morning,“ Max Dowman got half an hour in place of Saka.

This was a great opportunity to get some minutes into the youngster who may well be needed more as Madueke recovers from his injury.

Dowman did not look overawed in the least and he carried the ball confidently after coming on. He spotted Gyökeres' run from deep with 15 minutes to go which almost got him an assist.
