Gabriel's headed goal deep into injury-time handed Arsenal all three points at Newcastle and lifted the Gunners to second in the Premier League table just two points behind the leaders Liverpool.

Nick Woltemade gave the home side the lead in the 34th minute when he headed home Sandro Tonali's cross from close range.

The match erupted into controversy as Gabriel appeared to strike the goalscorer in the head with his arm a few moments later. Both the referee and VAR appeared to miss the incident caught on live television and the Arsenal defender was not penalised.

The Gunners equalised with six minutes left. Mikel Merino who had been introduced as a second-half substitute with 20 minutes left to go headed in from Declan Rice's teasing cross.

That late equaliser set the stage for Gabriel Magalhães to steal all three points deep into stoppage time. Martin Ødegaard's inswinging corner from the right found Gabriel's towering header, where he made no mistake from a yard out.

Positive #1: Arsenal didn't fold under physical pressure

Newscastle were determined to be physical against an Arsenal team that they may have perceived to have a soft underbelly. That simply is not the case this season.

Gabriel and Viktor Gyökeres showed fight and determination throughout. In a match that had already got away from referee Jarred Gillett. Gabriel should have received at least a yellow for his assault on Newcastle's German striker Nick Woltemade.

Then with the match boiling over, Jamaal Lascelles almost ripped Gyökeres' face off in a desparate exhibition of the darkest of dark arts. Much to Gyökeres' credit, he made no complaint. He didn't even go down.

This is a different Arsenal. This is a tough Arsenal. Tough sides win titles. Just ask Patrick Viera, Roy Keane, Alan Shearer, Martin Keown, Jimmy Case and Greame Souness.
