Pro #2: Suited to Premier League rigours

Arteta does love a bit of Premier League experience.

That penchant may have stopped us signing Bruno before his Newcastle move, with the boss generally targeting domestic names in the market and South American talents often considered risks as they need to adapt to the English game.

However, Bruno seems well able for it. He has proved as much on the pitch since his 2022 arrival via tough tackling and powerful drives through the middle, while a heart-on-the-sleeve mentality speaks to his unwavering commitment and has installed him as a Tyneside cult hero - cemented by his role in securing Champions League football there last year.

Although our initial hesitation will cost us a few extra millions, Arsenal can be rest assured that Bruno would slot in straight away and he would likely revel in the expectation.

Con #2: Not worth the money

Newcastle hold all the cards as Bruno only signed a new deal in October, and the £100m release clause will be the starting point for any negotiations.

The consensus remains that he would leave for slightly less (perhaps ≈ 85m?), yet it is still an extortionate fee and present squad options (Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira, Timber return) suggest Arsenal should invest their money elsewhere.

Right-sided centre-backs, wingers and a striker are also on the Gunners' to-do list, so we do not have club-record-like funds lying around for this move - even with domestic and European bonuses to come - and should not let Newcastle hold us to ransom.

Despite Bruno’s undoubted talent, there are better ways of investing that sort of money. I wonder if the Toon frontline is open for business…
