Not much went right for Arsenal in Bergamo, but Mikel Arteta's squad at least avoided defeat to begin this season's foray into the UEFA Champions League. A 0-0 draw against Europa League holders Atalanta came courtesy of the spectacular from goalkeeper David Raya and more of what is now becoming routine from those just in front of him.

Martin Odegaard being on the treatment table means this Arsenal side is devoid of creativity. No matter because Mikel Arteta was content to rely on another bus-parking special after consistently dropping 10 players deep to beat Spurs in the North London Derby.

A sequel to Sunday's rearguard action was needed because Arsenal's midfield was soporific. Thomas Partey couldn't find his passing range, and Kai Havertz offered little inspiration behind a front three let down by misfiring Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

Fortunately, these Gunners are now becoming masters in the art of ceding possession, keeping gaps small and forming three lines in front of the goalkeeper. It works when the keeper in question is as good as Raya, whose remarkable efforts to deny a penalty and the subsequent rebound were the true highlights of this otherwise tepid game.

1. David Raya

The endless hype surrounding Arteta, generated almost en masse among the media, as well as from large sections of the fanbase, can be grating at times. Yet, if there's a good reason to hop aboard the cringey hype train it's how the manager has often got the big decisions right. None more so than choosing Raya to supplant an in-form Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks.

It wasn't a popular call at the time, but Raya has since rewarded his gaffer's faith and then some. Last season's Golden Glove winner in the Premier League looks even better this campaign.

Raya provided yet more highlights when he turned away Mateo Retegui's 51st-minute spot-kick, before clawing the ensuing header clear. This was a special double save from a stopper in peak form.

Raya has only gotten better behind an unshakeable back four that still relies on strength in the middle. One link in that defensive chain stayed strong in Italy.
