4. Yangel Herrera (Girona FC)

This last contender is more of a direct Merino alternative and, while perhaps expensive, should be less so compared to previous names.

Herrea enjoyed a stellar campaign in the Girona side last year as they qualified for the Champions League (first time in club history). He played his part thanks to a strong, tough-tackling style and some nimble movement even with his big frame, while he stands among the best in Europe for aerial dominance (97th percentile).

Unlike others mentioned, the 26-year-old can operate at #8 or #6 (though he fits better at #6) and, thus, he may stand out for Arteta as he looks at where best to deploy Declan Rice. Having another option at the base is a huge allure given the few market opportunities there at the moment.

Girona would be reluctant to sell, but a £30-40m bid should test their resolve and the arrival of Oriol Romeu this week means they might already have a replacement for him in place.

He is a left-field name and one Arsenal would do well to consider.
