Alex Runarsson was another player who joined in the 2020 summer window, signing from Dijon for a fee of £1.8m.

He initially looked like a decent backup keeper when he kept two clean sheets in four appearances in the UEFA Europa League. However, this perception did not last particularly long.

Runarsson had a disaster when he started the Gunners' 4-1 League Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City. The Iceland international was at fault for two of the visitors' goals; completely fumbling a Riyad Mahrez free-kick into his own net.

Following this dreadful performance, he only made one more appearance for the club when he came on as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the Premier League, taking the place of dismissed Bernd Leno.

He was deemed not good enough by the club and spent the following seasons on loan at various teams across Europe before seeing his contract terminated in January 2024. He joined FC Copenhagen on a free transfer having made just six appearances for Arsenal.
