Arsenal endured a shock 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham as they fall behind fellow title challengers Liverpool.

Despite Mikel Arteta's side getting off to a strong start in the game and creating plenty of early chances, they were unable to capitalise on their early dominance - something that has been something of a theme this season.

The Gunners were made to rue their earlier missed chances when, in the 13th minute, a defensive calamity handed an early goal to Tomas Soucek, who opened the scoring for the hosts.

There was mass controversy over the goal as the ball appeared to go out of play in the build-up but, for the second time this season, the Video Assistant Referee deemed the footage to be inconclusive and the goal stood against the Gunners.

From here Arsenal lost their grip on the game and, while they were still creating slight chances, never really threatened the West Ham goal, as David Moyes' side played excellently.

Unfortunately, the second half did not offer much of a let-off for Arsenal as, in the 55th minute, former Gunner Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home from a corner to double West Ham's lead shortly after the break.

Arsenal began to create some better chances from here, though the visitors remained a persistent threat and were able to shut the hosts out of the game completely.

As the game looked to be drawing to a conclusion, Declan Rice gave away a penalty against his former club, though Said Benrahma's effort was saved by David Raya - ensuring that the game finished with the score 2-0.

The result is a significant blow to Arsenal's title hopes and once again highlights the club's need for a clinical striker - while West Ham move above Man United into sixth - an excellent turn in fortune from the start of the season.

Arsenal 0-2 West Ham Player Ratings

Goalkeeper & Defenders

David Raya 7/10: Despite conceding twice, there was little that Raya could have done for either goal, and his last-minute penalty save was one of the very few moments of 'joy' to look back on in the game.

Ben White 6/10: White did not do too much wrong in the game, though seemed to be a little off of his usual attacking output, and took too long on the ball in the later stages as we were desperately chasing the game.

William Saliba 6/10: Once again, Saliba did not seem to much wrong in the game, but it felt as though his usual aerial superiority was somewhat obsolete tonight, which gave a handful of promising chances to the visitors.

Gabriel 5/10: For the most part Gabriel had a good game, but his involvement in the calamity of West Ham's opening goal is impossible to look past.

Oleksandr Zinchenko 5/10: As has become something of a theme in recent weeks, Zinchenko left a lot to be desired defensively, and often found himself being caught well out of position. as West Ham countered - which left us very stretched at times.
