Arsenal 4-2 Leicester: Player ratings as Trossard saves Gunners against Foxes
- Leandro Trossard struck in stoppage time to seal victory over Leicester
- Gabriel Martinelli and Trossard scored amid impressive first-half for Gunners
- James Justin brace stunned the Gunners
Two stoppage time goals ensured Arsenal escaped with all three points against Leicester on Saturday afternoon as the Gunners capitalised on Manchester City being held at Newcastle earlier in the day.
A sluggish start prevented Arsenal from asserting early pressure, but the Gunners quickly found their groove and barely gave Leicester an inch. A change of sock aesthetic for Gabriel Martinelli paid dividends as he opened the scoring with his 50th Premier League goal contribution. The Brazilian converted from a Jurrien Timber cross.
Suffocation was the hosts' goal in the aftermath, and Mikel Arteta's side were successful in ensuring the game was played in the Foxes' half. Steve Cooper's side succumbed to sustained pressure for the remainder of the opening period, and a fluid Arsenal outfit came close on multiple occasions to doubling their lead.
The second goal their first-half performance warranted eventually arrived via the right boot of Leandro Trossard, allowing the Emirates faithful to breathe a little easier during the half-time interval.
A second-half procession was expected in the north London sun, but Arsenal enjoyed nothing of the sort thanks to James Justin, whose brace brought Leicester, from out of nowhere, back into the game. The full-back's equaliser was an outrageous finish, stunning the Emirates.
It was the Mads Hermansen show from that moment on as the Leicester goalkeeper produced an outstanding performance to frustrate the Gunners. The Dane produced remarkable saves from seemingly every Gunner before Trossard, via Wilfred Ndidi, ensured the hosts escaped with all three points at the last as the clutch Belgian bagged a scrappy but huge winner.
An even later Kai Havertz goal put a little bit of gloss on the scoreline, and Arsenal's win saw them move alongside City at the top of the Premier League table before Liverpool take on Wolves this evening.
Here are the Arsenal player ratings from their dramatic victory over the Foxes.
Arsenal 4-2 Leicester player ratings
Goalkeeper & Defenders
David Raya (GK) - 5/10 - There was nothing Raya could do to deny Justin's brace.
Jurrien Timber (RB) - 8/10 - Really enjoyed Timber on the overlap, with the Dutchman setting up the opener after venturing into the final third. A class act, and Ben White may well have his work cut out.
William Saliba (CB) - 6/10 - Aggression and proactivity allowed him to dominate Jamie Vardy early on, but the wily old forward did have more success against Arsenal's Rolls Royce as the contest wore on.
Gabriel (CB) - 6.5/10 - There was no set-piece domination from big Gab on this occasion, although the Brazilian did come close to scoring for the third consecutive game. Wasn't overly busy defensively.
Riccardo Calafiori (LB) - 8/10 - The Italian's arrival was necessary for games like these. Calafiori was ever so confident in possession, marauding across the Emirates turf with a swagger. He constantly sought to speed things up in and around the final third, with the unicorn defender producing a hugely encouraging performance. The left-hand side has been unlocked!
