Last week, it seemed like the Riccardo Calafiori transfer to Arsenal would happen rapidly. After all, the Gunners had moved quickly from their initial interest in the Italy international to engaging with both him and Bologna. However, the transfer appears to be stuck at a standstill.

Arsenal fail to meet Riccardo Calafiori transfer demands again

Personal terms are believed to be agreed and Calafiori wants the transfer to Arsenal. However, now it comes down to Arsenal agreeing terms with Bologna. Given the positive relationship between the two clubs when Takehiro Tomiyasu signed, this isn't expected to be an issue. Currently, though, things aren't moving as quickly as Arsenal fans would ideally like.

Still, this is all part and parcel of the summer transfer window action. Transfers move at the same pace as they have always done, it's just that fans learn about the potential deals at a much earlier stage than they used to.

According to a report from Sky Sports Italia, Arsenal are currently behind in their valuation of Riccardo Calafiori. Bologna would like €50m plus a percentage of any future sale Arsenal may make. However, the Gunners have tabled just €40m with add-ons and no sell-on clause, going against Bologna's request.

There is still plenty of time in the summer transfer window. It has also not been long into negotiations, so fans have no reason to worry. We live in a social media age where every stage of the deal is documented but the truth is, club representatives have seen deals like this a hundred times already, so the transfer is still on the right track.

Undoubtedly, though, Arsenal need to meet Bologna's valuation if they are to stand a chance of getting this deal over the line. They are not alone in their hunt to sign Riccardo Calafiori, with other sides such as Liverpool and Tottenham. Those two clubs are probably watching over this situation, hoping that Arsenal flop.

Why Arsenal want to sign Riccardo Calafiori

Riccardo Calafiori is a versatile defender. While his primary position is at centre back, he has also shown a keen ability to play as a left-back during his time in Serie A.

Without a doubt, it will be the left-back position which Mikel Arteta has in mind. After all, Gabriel and William Saliba have the centre back partnership on lockdown. Furthermore, Riccardo Calafiori is an obvious upgrade on the likes of Jakub Kiwior, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oleksandr ZInchenko.

An aggressive defender who is more than capable of playing out from tight situations, he would certainly come into this Arsenal team to improve its core.
