2. Penalty heroics to break Champions League curse

Arsenal’s return to Champions League football started in the best possible way with a goal in the 8th minute. The Gunners cruised through their group and seemed to get a favourable round of 16 draw in the form of Porto.

However, it all went wrong in Portugal. The home side scored a last-minute rocket to leave Arsenal staring down the barrel of another last-16 defeat, with one leg left to go to change their fortunes.

Porto put up a stubborn performance and Leandro Trossard’s goal was only enough to force extra-time and eventually penalties. In hindsight, the Gunners had nothing to fear. They scored every single penalty they took across the entire season. However, with a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals on the line, anything was possible.

The Gunners were in need of a hero and they found him in the form of David Raya. As Arsenal’s outfield players put the ball in the net, Raya made sure that Porto did not. The Spaniard saved two penalties to ensure that the victory belonged to Arsenal.
