Arsenal's 2024 begins with a tough FA Cup third-round tie at home to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Supporters went into Christmas optimistic after the Gunners secured a well-earned 1-1 draw at Anfield on 23 December, but back-to-back defeats have cast a gloomy cloud over north London at the start of the new year.

Liverpool's productive festive period means they currently hold a five-point advantage over Arsenal in the title race, with Mikel Arteta's side slipping down to fourth.

However, there's a competition shift this weekend as Arsenal aim to kick-start their FA Cup journey with a big win. No team has lifted this trophy more than the Gunners, with Arteta guiding the club to their 14th success at the end of his first season in 2020.

Since then, though, Arsenal have failed to progress beyond the fourth-round, while Liverpool got their hands on the trophy in 2022.

Arsenal team news

Takehiro Tomiyasu returned from injury against Fulham, but he's since joined the Japan squad for the 2023 Asian Cup.

Thomas Partey was supposed to be away for AFCON, but his injury meant he wasn't called up.

Bukayo Saka and Ben White have supposedly been playing through injuries, so both could earn some respite this weekend. However, it wouldn't be a surprise if both keep their places in the team.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is a doubt with a calf injury, while Jurrien Timber and Fabio Vieira are certainties to miss out.

Liverpool team news

The Reds have lost Mohamed Salah to AFCON, while Wataru Endo has teamed up with Takehiro Tomiyasu at the Asian Cup.

Dominik Szoboszlai picked up a hamstring injury on New Year's Day and is unlikely to feature, so we should see Ryan Gravenberch start in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister will play at the base of midfield, while Harvey Elliott is set to replace Salah in the team.

Joel Matip, Thiago, Stefan Bajcetic, and Andy Robertson are still all out injured.

Arsenal vs Liverpool score prediction

The potential for rotated XIs makes this a tricky one to call, but taking Klopp's side away from Anfield certainly benefits the hosts. Salah's absence is, of course, huge.

Arsenal haven't been particularly bad during their slump, but they were woeful in the defeat to Fulham. Arteta will be desperate for a swift turnaround at the start of 2024. Liverpool's style is reminiscent of vintage Klopp once more, and while the Gunners boss will attempt to bring about stability to Sunday's cup tie, this has the makings of a goal-fest.

Let's back Arsenal to return to winning ways in a thriller.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-2 Liverpool
