Arsenal's summer transfer window is finally beginning to heat up. They are thought to be closing in on signing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, with an announcement expected imminently. After they have signed Calafiori, the attention could switch to the midfield or even the attack. After all, the name Mikel Merino has been doing the rounds a lot over the last few days.

However, a transfer target who needs no introduction to the Arsenal fans is Viktor Gyokeres. The Sporting CP striker could be due a move back to England after tearing it apart in The Primeira Liga, with Arsenal heavily interested in signing him. That said, "interested" has become a throw-away term in the realm of transfer talk - What concrete moves have actually been made by Arsenal to sign Gyokeres?

Well, none at this stage. But they may have been handed an advantage nevertheless.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal could bid £60m for Viktor Gyokeres transfer

According to a report from Team Talk, Liverpool are not currently interested in bidding for Viktor Gyokeres. He is a player who Arne Slot admires, but they are not actively looking to sign him, unless an opportunity presents itself. The report does also state that Arsenal could be readying their first offer for the Swedish striker in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal's opening for Viktor Gyokeres is expected to be between £55m and £60m, says Fabrizio Romano (h/t Team Talk). This is a very substantial low-ball offer, considering Gyokeres has a release clause of just under £85m. So, it remains to be seen whether or not Sporting will even entertain this offer from Arsenal.

That said, it's a common practice in the transfer market that clubs will open bidding at a lower price than they'd be willing to pay. This is because it then allows the club more room to negotiate. Therefore, Arsenal fans should take comfort in the knowledge that there is more than £60m allocated to the budget for a new striker this summer.

As things stand, Arsenal have Kai Havertz at the top of his game in a centre-forward role. Also, Gabriel Jesus is impressing during pre-season. Therefore, contrary to popular belief the Gunners are not desperate to sign a new striker this summer. That said, Gyokeres would certainly elevate the club to new heights, so it could be a golden opportunity for Mikel Arteta and Edu.
