Frank Lampard is impressed with the Arsenal defensive duo. However, he has brutally down-played their work for one key reason.

Arsenal beat Paris Saint-Germain at home in the UEFA Champions League. It was an assured performance from the Gunners and, most importantly, they kept a clean sheet.

It was a game where Arsenal did not hold dominance. They scored two well-worked goals in the first half, including a great set piece by Bukayo Saka. After this, though, the pressure was mounted on them by Paris Saint-Germain.

The French side held the main bulk of possession (65%) and had more shots (10) than Arsenal (6). However, Paris Saint-Germain had zero big chances and it was thanks to one defensive duo; William Saliba and Gabriel.

Despite their partnership, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard refuses to compare William Saliba and Gabriel to other great defensive duos of the past. He says that they can't be mentioned in the same sentence as the likes of Terry-Carvalho until they win trophies.

In his own words when asked whether such comparisons could be made, Lampard said: "No, not yet. If they go on to win two or three Premier Leagues or the Champions League, then maybe you could compare them."

Continuing, Lampard said: "At this point, no, but what they're doing is great. Win some stuff boys then you can get in that conversation [laughs]."

Tough crowd, for sure. But it's understandable. Frank Lampard not only played in a different era, but he played for Chelsea. Therefore, he'd be hard-pressed to compare his rivals to his beloved team.

Arsenal fans should not seek validation. William Saliba and Gabriel are currently the best defensive partnership in the Premier League, if not in the world. Naturally, the more great performances they have in the Champions League, the more it will be recognised.

But for now, Arsenal fans must rest assured, knowing their defence is covered adequately (to say the least). It is a nice feeling, particularly considering the pain endured during the Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz era.

Both William Saliba and Gabriel made the PFA Team of the Year. It was no surprise, considering they're an indestructible force. It is also worth noting that their best days are still ahead of them, which is a frightening thought for the rest of the league.
