A thrilling encounter at the Etihad ended two apiece as John Stones snatched a late point for Manchester City after Arsenal were reduced to ten men at the end of the first half.

The pre-match fears of a snooze-fest were almost immediately dispelled as City started the game superbly and they took an early lead through Erling Haaland. Arsenal thus trailed away from home for the first time in the Premier League this calendar year, but the tide turned after Rodri was forced off after sustaining a non-contact knee injury.

Riccardo Calafiori's stunning equaliser was undeniably against the run of play, but Mikel Arteta's side settled in the aftermath and they ended the first half in the ascendancy with Gabriel dominating again from set-pieces to nod home the go-ahead goal.

However, Leandro Trossard's second booking on the stroke of half-time tilted the contest back in the Cityzens' favour. The Belgian's harsh dismissal brought about a dynamic change, with Arteta opting for a 6-3-0 and Arsenal having little interest in retaining possession. They understandably shut-up shop and the Emirates was parked in front of David Raya's goal.

It was a nauseating 45 minutes with City camped outside the Arsenal box, but the Gunners were immensely disciplined in their block. The hosts huffed and puffed, but the disadvantaged visitors only grew in stature and confidence.

They seemed destined to cap off a monumental defensive display with a statement victory, but there was late heartbreak as substitute Stones crashed home from close range after latching onto a loose ball in the Gunners box.

Stones' strike could prove to be a huge moment in the title race when it's all said and done, but Arsenal can take immense pride from their showing in Manchester.

Here are the Gunners player ratings from the Etihad.

Goalkeeper & Defenders

David Raya (GK) - 8/10 - The Spaniard was tested infrequently after Arsenal went down to ten, but he made the necessary stops to preserve the visitors' lead (before he was eventually beaten). Immense when claiming the high ball.

Jurrien Timber (RB) - 8.5/10 - You will find a certain Jeremy Doku in the Dutchman's back pocket. Timber was brilliant one-on-one and he offered moments of real quality in possession. A top performance.

William Saliba (CB) - 8.5/10 - Class. Just pure class. Arsenal's Rolls Royce did the nitty gritty stuff superbly, matching Haaland in the second half.

Gabriel (CB) - 8.5/10 - The big man just can't be stopped. He was just seconds away from being Arsenal's match-winner for the second week in a row. Impenetrable in his own box.

Riccardo Calafiori (LB) - 7.5/10 - Well, that was some outing. Calafiori was welcomed to the Premier League by fellow newbie Savinho in the build-up to Haaland's opener, but the Italian responded by scoring a special equaliser. Had some issues defensively, but an encouraging display.
