The unfortunate Martin Odegaard injury has given Mikel Arteta time to think. In fact, it may have inspired a new Arsenal transfer plan.

Since the September international break, Arsenal have been without their captain Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian, who is one of the best players at the club, is believed to be out "for a while."

Arsenal have maintained a steady run of results, despite Martin Odegaard being out. They are yet to lose a game all season and even picked up key results away at Tottenham, Atalanta and Man City.

Their ability to function without Odegaard to one side, Mikel Arteta will want him back sooner rather than later, particularly when the fixture list continues to heat up after the October international break.

Martin Odegaard injury inspires a new Arsenal transfer plan

According to a report from Football Insider, Arsenal will reconsider their approach in the January transfer window. This decision correlates with the unfortunate timing of the Martin Odegaard injury.

Mick Brown, a former chief scout of Man United and "well-connected recruitment expert" told Football Insider: “I’m told Arsenal will be looking for another option in January.”

Brown continued: “Odegaard has been injured, but what happens if Declan Rice gets injured? Or one of their centre-backs? They will, I’m sure, be looking at all aspects of their team to see the areas they need to improve."

Arsenal do not need to sign another first-team midfielder. They already have Declan Rice, Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard. When they are all fit, this will be the midfield trio of choice.

However, to compete with Man City, Arsenal could do with every ounce of depth possible. Man City are the example to follow and even with Rodri injured, they still have one of the best lineups in the world.

There never seems to be a shortage of midfielders in the transfer window. However, January is notoriously a more difficult window to buy in than the summer transfer window. After all, clubs are more likely to hold onto their best options.

That said, there is a growing feeling over the last few windows that when Mikel Arteta wants something, he often gets it. The three cases in point include Mikel Merino, Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori; they were all wanted by top clubs but chose Arsenal.

Hopefully, Arsenal have a fully fit squad by the January transfer window. Either way, this should not derail their transfer plans.
