Mikel Arteta refusing to panic after Arsenal's defeat to West Ham

Arsenal had over 30 shots in their 2-0 loss to West Ham on Thursday night and Mikel Arteta was at a loss when trying to explain how his side didn't score.

Arsenal were left to rue several missed chances as West Ham pulled off a surprise 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium to move up to sixth in the table.

The Gunners started well but didn't capitalise on their dominance as West Ham made them pay after 13 minutes as Tomáš Souček scored following a poor defensive series for Arsenal.

From there, Arsenal never really threatened the Hammers' goal despite having a total of 30 shots (just eight on target), while the visitors were clinical in the final third and their distinct threat from set-pieces was realised at the start of the second half.

Such a result was no doubt frustrating to take for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, as for all the huffing and puffing his side did, it simply wasn't enough against a well-organised West Ham outfit.

"It’s what it is, we have to try to generate," Arteta said on his teams missed chances via arsenal.com. "If we don’t score goals in thirty shots, we have to do fifty or sixty to try to score, it’s the only thing. I cannot imagine a game that you have more dominance, more touches in the box, less situations of the opponents against a really good West Ham side, but today wasn’t enough to win the game."

Arsenal seemed to be rather sluggish in the final third as the defensive set up from West Ham caused all sorts of problems for Arteta's side.

The loss sees Arsenal sit second in the league table but the problems in attack continue to haunt Arteta's side. With the January transfer window opening in a couple of days, it will make for interesting viewing to see if the heirachy will look to strengthen the squad.

It was a poor loss for Arsenal as they had more than enough shots to win the game, it just lacked a killer edge in the final third, whereas West Ham had no such issues.

But as Arteta said, "it is what it is," although that won't do much for the Gunners faithful after seeing their team play toothless football in the final third.
