No Edu masterclass but Arsenal closing in on great deal for Eddie Nketiah
- Arsenal happy to let Eddie Nketiah leave for Marseille on loan
- €30m obligation to buy also inserted in deal
- Marseille yet to make final decision
Eddie Nketiah to Marseille is back on!
Reports of the French club's move for Elye Wahi dampened hopes within Gunners quarters that they'd strike a deal for the English forward, but Marseille's reported unsuccessful chase of the Lens forward has seen them pivot back to Nketiah.
With Kai Havertz shining up top and Gabriel Jesus looking as sharp as he has since the start of the 2022/23 campaign in pre-season, Nketiah was poised for a quiet season at the Emirates had he remained with the club.
While a fine end to the 2021/22 season saw him sign a lucrative new extension, he scored just five league goals last term and failed to make a single start during the second half of the season. He's been serviceable for Mikel Arteta since signing a new deal, but now is the right time to move on.
Arsenal are ready to let him go.
Marseille back in the Eddie Nketiah hunt with Arsenal ready to sanction loan
Arsenal's valuation of Nketiah was believed to be close to the €30m mark, but Marseille were never going to reach that price point. Thus, the two clubs, after the French side failed with two proposals, have reached a compromise.
The Athletic's David Ornstein broke the news on Friday morning that the Gunners are happy to loan Nketiah to Marseille for the 2024/25 season, but a €30m obligation to buy clause will also be inserted in the deal.
The book is in Marseille's court now, but there's an expectation that a deal will be struck. The striker has already agreed to a five-year deal.
While I wouldn't go as far as labelling this an 'Edu masterclass' as some have, the Brazilian has done an excellent job to potentially broker this deal. With Eddie's potential suitors dwindling and the club surely keen to get the striker off their books this summer, this is a fine deal from Arsenal's perspective - but we're hardly robbing Marseille in broad daylight.
He's not a striker who's going to win you league titles, but Nketiah has evolved considerably from his youth into a multi-faceted forward who's pretty reliable in front of goal. He's no superstar, and a €30m price tag is very reasonable.
Nketiah has a great chance at a huge French club to make a name for himself as one of Marseille's leading men under Roberto De Zerbi. I'm thrilled for the Hale End graduate!
