Should Reiss Nelson leave Arsenal this summer?
- The winger has failed to make a big impact at the club so it could be time for him to leave
Reiss Nelson signed a new contract with Arsenal last summer, keeping him at the club until 2027. Despite penning a new deal, he rarely featured last season and his future has been thrown into doubt.
Nelson has never been much more than a squad player under Mikel Arteta and his occasional heroic cameos don't seem to have changed that.
With his lack of game time and the potential for this to decrease even more next season, it could be a wise decision for Reiss Nelson to start asking himself if his future will be at Arsenal.
Should Reiss Nelson leave Arsenal this summer?
Nelson played just 23 games last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists. 15 of these appearances came in the Premier League with just one being a start.
A major factor in Nelson's lack of game time is undoubtedly down to the brilliance of Bukayo Saka. Nelson is never going to displace Saka on the right wing and is also not good enough to play on the left over the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
When he has been given the chance over these players, Nelson has put in lacklustre performances so Mikel Arteta would not have been impressed.
As a result, Arteta most likely does not deem Nelson good enough to deserve more chances in this Arsenal squad so will continue to utilise him as merely a squad player. He was even absent from seven of Arsenal's last eight matchday squads, remaining on the bench in the 2-0 win at Wolves.
With the Gunners potentially signing a new winger as cover for Saka this summer, Nelson will fall further down the pecking order and could be limited to even fewer appearances next season.
Nelson is good enough to be a squad player at Arsenal but does have the ability to play regular football for a lesser Premier League side. While the Gunners should look to keep hold of Nelson for squad depth, he should be looking to seek a move away for the sake of his career.
A departure would be a loss for Arsenal but it is unlikely they would stand in his way. Nelson is currently valued at €15m and with three years remaining on his contract, the Gunners could look to fetch a decent fee if he is to leave the club this summer.
