Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal: Player ratings as Gunners hold off Spurs fightback
- Arsenal secured huge victory in N17
- Gunners raced into 3-0 half-time lead
- Spurs scored twice in second half to set up nervy conclusion
Arsenal secured a huge win in the North London Derby on Sunday afternoon as they held off a late Tottenham fightback to win 3-2.
The Gunners were utterly ruthless in the opening 45 minutes, soaking up Spurs pressure and making the most of the moments they had going forward. After a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg own goal gave Arsenal the led, Spurs hit the post through Cristian Romero and had a goal disallowed following VAR intervention.
Micky van de Ven's chalked off equaliser gave the Gunners a kick up the backside, and they soon doubled their lead through Bukayo Saka, who finished off a slick counter superbly. A Kai Havertz header from another set-piece further enhanced Arsenal's lead, and they took their 3-0 advantage into half-time.
Arsenal sought to control the contest after the break by enjoying more of the ball, and they started the second half with a swagger. However, a horrendous David Raya error allowed Cristian Romero to pull one back out of nothing, with Arsenal enduring a nervy period in the aftermath.
The Gunners then restored some control, but Declan Rice's kick on Ben Davies handed Spurs a penalty. With Son Heung-min converting, a nervy finale ensued. However, Arsenal did an excellent job of keeping the hosts at bay despite plenty of late pressure and they secured a mammoth victory.
Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal player ratings
Here are the Arsenal player ratings from a chaotic North London Derby.
Goalkeeper & Defenders
David Raya (GK) - 6/10 - Tried his best to get Spurs back into the game with a woeful error in possession. Claimed the high ball well.
Ben White (RB) - 7.5/10 - White's key contributions were his obstructions of Guglielmo Vicario which allowed Arsenal to score two set piece goals.
William Saliba (CB) - 8/10 - A performance of class from Saliba, who was never flustered. The Frenchman defended the Arsenal box superbly.
Gabriel (CB) - 8/10 - Like Saliba, Gabriel's positional sense was often excellent when defending Spurs' crosses. The Brazilian certainly wasn't troubled by Son Heung-min, especially when the South Korean wasn't running in behind.
Takehiro Tomiyasu (LB) - 6/10 - A bit of a mixed bag. Faced a lot of one-v-ones and was beaten on occasions. Was rarely used in possession.
