Arsenal are three games into the 2024-25 season and Mikel Arteta already faces a dilemma in regard to who should be the main man on the left wing.

Gabriel Martinelli started the Gunners' opening two matches but was replaced by Leandro Trossard for the third. These two players have been battling over the left wing position for the past year and a half, and it looks like this will continue into this campaign.

The loan signing of Raheem Sterling has raised the question even more for Arteta and it is time to decide who should be Arsenal's main man on the left wing this season.

Let's go through the candidates, shall we?

Gabriel Martinelli has played on the left wing for much of his Arsenal career and has largely excelled in the position. He has scored 31 goals and provided 20 assists in 139 appearances in the position for the Gunners. His stats, along with his dribbling ability, demonstrate him as being a constant attacking threat for opposing defenders.

However, the Brazil international struggled last season and looks to still be with the 2024-25 campaign now underway. Many feel his struggles have come as a result of Granit Xhaka's departure in the 2023 summer transfer window. His final execution has been shoddy and must improve.

Despite his recent poor form, Martinelli is still arguably the most talented and overall best player among Arsenal's left wing candidates. He does need to step up his game, however, if he wants to be Arteta's first choice on the left wing. With Mikel Merino viewed as the much-needed replacement for Xhaka, the Spaniard could help Martinelli get back to his best form this season.
