Premier League great Alan Shearer tips Arsenal superstar for England captaincy
- Former England striker Alan Shearer has waxed lyrical over Bukayo Saka
- Shearer backs Saka to be a future England captain
- Saka has worn the armband for Arsenal numerous times
The Premier League's all-time record goalscorer has been waxing lyrical over Arsenal superstar Bukayo Saka, and has tipped the "phenomenal talent" for England captaincy further down the line.
Alan Shearer is a prominent media figure in the UK having spent years as a pundit on the immensely popular Match of the Day. The former great striker has drifted into the world of co-commentary and podcasting, and he's garnered plenty of respect for his level-headed opinions - well, when he's not discussing Newcastle - and detailed analysis.
And one player Shearer can't seem to get enough of is the Gunners' starboy. We get it, Alan.
Why Alan Shearer is backing Bukayo Saka for future England captaincy
We're all well aware of Saka's significance in Arsenal's rise under Mikel Arteta, but the winger has also been a critical figure in England's journey when Gareth Southgate was at the helm. Saka was just 19 when he made his international debut and the same age when he was subject to vile online abuse after having his penalty saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Euro 2020 final.
""I am 100% certain Saka could be a future England captain.""
- Alan Shearer
Shearer lauded the "gutsy and tough" winger, who has since represented the Three Lions at two more major tournaments, and has backed the 23-year-old to one day wear the armband for his country having taken on the responsibility in north London with Martin Odegaard nursing an ankle injury.
"It wouldn’t surprise me to see Saka as a future England captain," Shearer told Betfair (via the Metro).
"He’s already captained Arsenal and because of his attitude, ability, and the way everyone looks up to him, that to me shows he has all the attributes to be an England captain."
The former England striker described Saka as "phenomenal" and "wonderful" as he continued to wax poetic, with the winger's recent form perhaps influencing Shearer's bullishness. Saka heads into the October international break having enjoyed a dominant start to the new season. The winger leads the Premier League with 27 chances created, 12 'big' chances created, and seven assists.
He's stepped up in a big way with captain Odegaard on the sidelines, and the winger has flourished despite the increased responsibility of donning the armband. One day, the Three Lions might benefit, too.
