Arsenal legend Paul Merson has warned that PSG cannot score first. If they do, he sees no way back for the Gunners in this tie.
In true Arsenal fashion, we've made life more difficult than it needs to be. Mikel Arteta's side played well at home against PSG but the scoreline didn't reflect that, and UEFA won't care about which team "deserved" to go through.
So, Arsenal head into the second leg with a one-goal deficit. They simply must beat PSG at the Parc des Princes, there are no two ways about it. A draw would see the Parisians go through, and so too would a loss.
However, Paul Merson said that the tie could end for Arsenal before the final whistle is blown, perhaps even before the half-time whistle. The Arsenal legend has warned that if PSG score first, there will be no way back into the match for Arsenal.
PSG vs Arsenal hasn’t even started, Paul Merson already sounds alarm
In his own words, Merse said: “If Arsenal score that first goal, it wipes out Tuesday’s performance and it’s game on. If Paris Saint-Germain score first, I can’t see any way back. And I know people will say that Aston Villa went 4-1 down, but they were at home, with nothing to lose and could have a right go at it."
Arsenal feel fairly confident heading into this match, and why wouldn't they? As far as the Gunners are concerned, they have absolutely nothing to lose, but everything to gain. The game is not over with at 1-0 agg.
However, at 2-0 agg, Arsenal's heads will seriously drop, and PSG's posture will only become more assertive. The French side is already playing with sheer confidence, so the last thing Arsenal want is to add even more reason to gloat.
On the other hand, Arsenal has struggled to come back from behind in recent matches. It would appear that when the Gunners go a goal or two down, they lack the ambition to fight back.
Ambition was shown against PSG in the 1st leg, but the technical ability was simply not there. The Gunners had a few chances and their loss wasn't through a lack of effort, however, they were simply outclassed by the PSG defenders and, of course, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Tonight, Arsenal not only need to win, but they need to score first, according to Paul Merson.
