Reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio does not think Arsenal want to sell star Riccardo Calafiori this summer.
Whenever he has played, Calafiori has been one of the best players for this Arsenal side. His defensive impact on the left has been impressive, and the player has grown a lot since joining the club two years ago.
However, that is about when he has been fit to play. Calafiori has also missed a lot of game time - much more than fans would have hoped to see in his first two years at the club.
Piero Hincapie has taken full advantage of the situation, playing numerous big games over the Italian.
Reliable journalist reassures Arsenal fans over Riccardo Calafiori's future
Calafiori was recently linked with Real Madrid as they are looking for a left-footed central defender who can also play as a left-back. Obviously, Calafiori is one of the best players in that position, which is why Real Madrid showed interest in him.
However, Di Marzio does not seem to think the player would leave this summer, not at the moment anyway.
He said “I don't think, at the moment, Arsenal wants to sell him because he's one of their best players. Mikel Arteta likes Calafiori a lot and I think Arsenal want to buy players in this window and not sell them.
“At the moment, there's only been a phone call. We'll see if Arsenal will sell him and if Real Madrid will put in a lot of money to convince Arsenal.
“Calafiori is very happy at Arsenal and in the Premier League. Of course, when Real Madrid calls and Mourinho calls, you have to listen. But he won't force a move because that's not his mood.
“Obviously his agent is working to understand if there is a possibility to open negotiations or not.”
That is it. Real Madrid have only had one phone call worth of contacts about the player, so it is not at any advanced stage at all. That is something to keep in mind.
Another thing is that Real Madrid are also interested in Josko Gvardiol, and actually, they are leaning towards him over Calafiori at the moment, which in itself is very assuring.
Fabrizio Romano said a few days ago that Calafiori is not being considered at the moment because of Real Madrid's current interest in Gvardiol.
Obviously, if they do come back for the Italian defender, Arsenal would want an important sum of money to be offered before they even think about selling him, but what Di Marzio said about the club not even wanting to sell is even better news in this case.
If Arsenal end up selling him, they would also want to go into the left-back / centre-back market, which, at the moment, does not have too many available stars. However, it is reassuring that it is not even close to happening at this stage.
It remains to be seen what ends up happening over the course of the summer, but as it stands, Calafiori is more in than out at Arsenal.
