Taking all three points from an away game with Wolves, despite an outrageous red card decision, has kept Arsenal in the thick of the Premier League title race. Substitute Riccardo Calafiori's goal proved enough even after referee Michael Oliver dismissed Myles Lewis-Skelly based on dubious reasoning. Fortunately, the Gunners were still able to rely on determined performances from a resolute trio.
This group kept Arsenal strong defensively after Lewis-Skelly had been given his marching orders two minutes before halftime. Preserving the clean sheet meant Calafiori's tidy finish was all the visitors needed for a grueling but rewarding 1-0 win.
A lone goal proved sufficient because of how David Raya and William Saliba kept the door shut at the back. It was a two-pronged effort based on Saliba keeping Wolves' primary goal-getter, striker Matheus Cunha, under wraps.
That left Raya to rebuff other members of an unconvincing forward line. The Spaniard succeeded, thanks to some clutch stops.
A team with more attacking talent would have punished Arsenal, but Wolves struggled to fashion chances even before midfielder Joao Gomes was shown a second yellow card on 70 minutes. Most of those struggles could be attributed to the way Declan Rice kept the back four shielded and made the hosts work for every blade of grass.
Here are three standouts from the 1-0 win over Wolves
1. Declan Rice
This game was the perfect illustration of what makes Rice a special player. It's not artful skill, nor overwhelming power.
The England international possesses elements of those things, but what makes Rice special is his energy level. Specifically, the running power that was just as high when Arsenal had 10 men as when the two teams squared off with 11 vs. 11.
Rice barely stopped moving at Molineux. He covered ground at both ends of the pitch and made himself an asset in every phase of the game.
Wolves found the barrier created by Rice and fellow midfield enforcer Thomas Partey tough to breach. The hosts also had a difficult time stopping Rice breaking from deep.
This was classic box-to-box stuff from the player Arsenal can't afford to be without during the business end of the season.
