Two Arsenal midfielders just made themselves completely untouchable

And they proved it when it mattered.

The Community Shield ended up being yet another walk in the park for Arsenal. The Gunners have a pretty incredible record at Wembley Stadium, the usual venue for the Community Shield, but they kept that form on the big stage intact even at the temporary venue, the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Two players who ended last season in fine form, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Martin Odegaard, started this season in the same manner. Odegaard was the best player on the pitch, and Lewis-Skelly broke the Man City defence immediately with a pinpoint through ball to Riccardo Calafiori.

The Community Shield taught Arsenal two invaluable lessons at the right time

Heading into the summer transfer window, you'd be excused for thinking that Myles Lewis-Skelly and Martin Odegaard were on Arsenal's for-sale pile.

No one can fully confirm whether they were or not. Only those in charge of decisions at Arsenal, who, let's face it, don't let much be known to the public domain.

If Lewis-Skelly or Odegaard were on Arsenal's for-sale list, though, they are two names who should immediately be removed. If the Community Shield proved anything, it's that they are untouchable, for two completely different reasons.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is STILL the Arsenal future

Myles Lewis-Skelly comes from Arsenal's Hale End academy, and he lives and breathes Arsenal. He's been on quite the journey at Arsenal, but towards crunch time last season, he was easily the best player at the club in those final handful of games.

Mikel Arteta finally gave in. He gave Arsenal fans everything they were waiting to see - Myles Lewis-Skelly in midfield. It was a sight that gave us everything we thought it would.

With progressive runs and a confident approach in the final third, Lewis-Skelly helped Arsenal get the goals they needed in those final games last season. This was, yet again, personified in the Community Shield as he picked up the ball outside the box and played the pass at the right time to open Calafiori's and Arsenal's account for the game.

There was even talk of Lewis-Skelly signing for Chelsea a few weeks ago... Yuck. Hopefully, he'll continue to don the Arsenal jersey this season.

Selling Martin Odegaard would be a cardinal sin

For the most part, Odegaard wasn't great last season. When Arsenal signed another midfielder in Bruno Guimaraes, the question turned to which current midfielder would leave.

Anyone who wanted Odegaard gone was served a slice of humble pie on Sunday afternoon. Odegaard was easily the best player on the pitch, and the way he orchestrated the midfield, while wowing the crowd a few times himself, showed he is an Arsenal untouchable once more.

Arsenal have plenty of midfield depth, which means Odegaard won't play the minutes he's used to. However, that's a good thing. Particularly at the start of the season, Mikel Arteta will need to rotate his options as much as possible after a hectic World Cup schedule.

Make no mistake about it. Odegaard will still be involved in the rotation at the Emirates Stadium, and so he should be. In no world should Arsenal consider him for sale.
