Viktor Gyokeres just keeps proving Arsenal fans wrong on international duty

If you disguised a Swedish fan and an Arsenal fan, you would immediately be able to tell which is which based on their feelings towards Viktor Gyokeres. While Swedish fans adore him, Arsenal fans have been growing incredibly frustrated with him.

On international duty, Viktor Gyokeres has scored twice in consecutive matches. Last week, he scored the winning goal for Sweden against Romania and last night, he also sealed the win for his country against Poland.

So why have Arsenal fans lost hope in him? If he can score for his country, he should be able to perform for his club.

Viktor Gyokeres for Sweden and Viktor Gyokeres for Arsenal are different

The truth is that Gyokeres plays a different role for his country to the role he plays for Arsenal. With Sweden, he is part of a strike partnership, but at Arsenal, he is expected to be the lone striker with two wingers either side of him.

He performs better in the strike partnership, but not because of his partner. Arsenal do not need to adapt their formation to suit Gyokeres' needs, but to get the best out of him, they do not need to place more emphasis on the attack.

With Sweden, Gyokeres doesn't need to go searching for reception. He is constantly fed chances, and given his goal-scoring instincts, he finishes them. At Arsenal, though, he is expected to drop deeper and get involved in link-up play. Let's face it, he's not that guy.

Arsenal are not above directly feeding their striker. When Mikel Merino has adopted the position in the past, he was treated as a target man - not just aerially, either. If Arsenal treated Gyokeres the same way they treated Merino, he would score goals. It's not exactly rocket science.

Now that Gyokeres has got his confidence back, Arsenal could benefit. After all, Kai Havertz has picked up an injury on the international break so if it leaves him out of Arsenal action, then we'll be seeing more of Gyokeres.

Gyokeres shouldn't need to adapt his game to play for Arsenal. Instead, Arsenal should adapt their game when they need to play Gyokeres.

Heading out of the international break, Arsenal will face Leeds United in the Premier League. It will feel like it's been years since Arsenal fans saw their team, but they won't have forgotten about that disgraceful performance against Brighton before the break. That said, Arsenal will need to get back to winning ways immediately.

There are many unknowns that this international break has stirred up, but what we do know is that Gyokeres still has that knack for scoring goals, and Arsenal need to capitalise on it.

Man City are top of the table, but (hopefully) their punishment looms. We are yet to see what it is, but Arsenal mustn't get caught up in things that are outside of their control. If last year's title race taught them anything, it's that they can only control what they can control, and they need 100% buy-in from every player. Gyokeres is one of those players.
