Despite what trolls might tell you, Viktor Gyökeres is cooking for Arsenal right now.
The Swedish striker, who made the move from Portugal to England in the summer, was under plenty of scrutiny. This is because he was tasked with the age-old Arsenal squad need. You don't need to search far at all to understand that Arsenal has needed a center forward for a while, and Gyökeres is their emphatic answer.
This longtime squad need, combined with the fact that Arsenal is the center of mockery most of the time anyway, points to neutral fans already writing off Viktor Gyökeres.
However, he certainly won't be sticking up his nose at three goals in his opening four Premier League games. Neither are Arsenal fans.
Tomorrow evening, Arsenal and Viktor Gyökeres return to the Champions League. They face Athletic Club away from home, and hope to start off on winning ways.
Viktor Gyökeres promises Arsenal fans before Champions League clash
Speaking to the media after the Nottingham Forest match, and before the Athletic Club match, Gyökeres has promised Arsenal fans that more is to come.
Gyökeres said: “Yeah, for sure [there is more to come]. You always want minutes, and you get into it easier when you play more. You want to perform and show that you deserve to be on the pitch. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
In truth, Gyökeres has never struck Arsenal fans as the type to be feeling the pressure. If anything, that's external noise for fans to deal with, and not Gyökeres. He will only accept criticism from those who matter: the coaching team at Arsenal and himself.
Speaking on feeling the pressure, Gyökeres added: “Of course it’s a big club and there’s going to be pressure. But you just try to make the best when you’re out on the pitch and not think too much about it.”
And he has made the best when he's on the pitch, in his own words.
Gyökeres scoring three goals at the start of the season is only bettered by Erling Haaland who, let's face it, everybody knew was going to win the Golden Boot anyway.
Finally, the Swedish striker concluded with a surprise statement, saying how easy it's been for him to slot into the team. This is evident by the passing movements and buildup play he's been involved in so far this season, already getting the best out of those around him.
“It’s been very easy to fit into the team,” said Gyökeres. “Of course, it takes some time to adapt to the style of play, but it’s been a good start. Playing with people like this is amazing; they always want to go forward and be a threat. You just have to be in the right positions and you’ll get chances.”
