Arsenal isn't a certainty to finish top four, and that is something Mikel Arteta has to make sure happens.

We have four Premier League games left in the season, and Arsenal isn't a certainty to finish in the top four, which for most, is unfathomable.

With the Gunners as things stand, only six points ahead of Manchester City in third, and seven ahead of Nottingham Forest in fourth, but also if we look a little deeper, Newcastle in fifth, is only eight points behind.

Plus, Forest and Newcastle both have games in hand over the Gunners.

It is here where Arsenal is in danger of something happening that most thought was impossible a couple of weeks ago. All it takes is for one or two poor results, and that gap can close and the Gunners are now a part of something they want no part of.

So due to that, and if Forest and Newcastle win their game in hand, there will be just five points that separates second from fifth, and that is nightmare fuel for the Gunners.

Why Arsenal must focus on Premier League as well as Champions League

We saw with Mikel Arteta's team selection against Brentford, with Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard and Myles Lewis-Skelly, that the focus was on Real Madrid and the second leg of their Champions League clash, which is fine, but now, the Gunners are in a tough position.

They are going for the Champions League and that's fine, but it is at the expense of the league to an extent.

The nightmare scenario here is the Gunners are dumped out of Europe and get overtaken in the race for the top four. Now, with four games left, Arsenal would have to seriously faulter, but all it takes is a couple of draws and now the Gunners are gettable.

It is worth noting that Arsenal, in its last four games, face Liverpool (away) and Newcastle (at home).

So they are not to be taken lightly, and if the Gunners draw both of them for argument's sake, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Forest will have the door to the top four wide open.

So as things stand, Arsenal and Arteta are in a tough spot. They can't be all gas no brakes in Europe because the league is now a precarious position.

Due to that, the Gunners must put as much focus domestically as they do in Europe and that is a tough thing to do.
