Riccardo Calafiori was absent while Arsenal were beaten on penalties by Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners acquired Calafiori in the summer off the back of a breakout campaign under Thiago Motta, with Mikel Arteta understood to be particularly keen on bringing the Italian international in.
Calafiori wooed supporters over the autumn and was heralded as the man to 'unlock' Arsenal's left-hand side following 12 months of purgatory, but the defender has suffered multiple injury setbacks since joining the club.
His latest injury saw him miss Sunday's defeat.
What injury has Riccardo Calafiori got?
We don't have the full picture, but Calafiori is currently dealing with a muscle injury having endured two spells out already this season due to knee issues.
The Italian suffered his first setback during the drab 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk back in October and was out for a month before he missed three games in December with a minor injury.
This would be his first muscular complaint since joining the club, but Calafiori endured plenty of similar issues before arriving in north London. His array of muscle injuries may be attributed to the devastating knee injury he sustained while playing for Roma in the UEFA Youth League. That could've ended his career before it got going.
There have since been seven separate instances of Calafiori missing games due to muscle injuries, including this one. He's had hamstring issues in the past.
Riccardo Calafiori's injury status for North London Derby
Calafiori's injury came out of nowhere with Arteta offering no update in his pre-match press conference last week. The extent of his latest setback is thus not yet known, but it seems as if the Italian international has a fight on his hands to be fit for the North London Derby.
Tottenham visit the Emirates on Wednesday night, with Arsenal desperately needing to win to potentially reignite the season. I don't even want to imagine the aftermath of a defeat.
Calafiori is one of several full-backs currently out injured, with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu also out injured. Jurrien Timber is also a doubt for Wednesday due to hamstring stiffness. Fortunately, Arteta has successfully integrated Hale End star Myles Lewis-Skelly into his framework, with the teenager impressing in an unfamiliar left-back role while Calafiori's been out.
Arteta has also occasionally picked Lewis-Skelly over the Italian when both have been available.
