William Saliba has committed his long-term future to Arsenal, with a new contract expected to be signed in the coming days. While Arsenal fans will jump for joy, it's not a reason to celebrate for some players in the squad.
William Saliba is at the top of the pile. Many would consider him Arsenal's most important player, because he's established himself as one of the best center backs in the world.
When Arsenal first signed William Saliba, it took him a while to break into the first team. However, spending the last few seasons in Mikel Arteta's back-line, Arsenal will never look back now.
The acquisition to keep hold of William Saliba, fending off interest from Real Madrid, is not to be overlooked. This is Arsenal's most important piece of business for the last few years.
However, it leaves two Arsenal defenders in a bit of a pickle.
William Saliba just left two Arsenal defenders in uncomfortable positions
Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White will now be scratching their heads about how they get into the Arsenal starting lineup long-term, for different reasons.
Mosquera has proven to be one of Arsenal's best signings of the summer transfer window. He filled in for Saliba excellently during the Frenchman's injury, making Arsenal fans not miss him that much.
However, if Arsenal's recent Premier League fixture against Man City is anything to go by, then it's clear as day who Mikel Arteta values higher at Man City. He opted to start William Saliba, which surprised nobody.
See, Mosquera could enter the form of his life, but he's playing in Arsenal's most heated position. Between Gabriel and William Saliba, Mosquera is pitted between a rock and a hard place.
The same can be said for Ben White.
Ben White is primarily a right-back these days, but his foundations are at center back. With Jurrien Timber making the RB slot his own, White might have considered handing in a job application at center back. However, it'd be no good.
Barring injuries or suspensions, Mosquera or White won't get a look in for Arsenal in the big games. It's pretty clear what Arsenal's best defense is now: Timber on the right, Saliba and Gabriel in the middle, Calafiori on the right.
Given the age of each of those players, that's not going to change anytime soon.
The one silver lining for Mosquera and White is that Arsenal and injuries go hand-in-hand. There's no point trying not to jinx it at this point: an Arsenal defender getting injured is as inevitable as getting taxed.
