Arsenal's win over Brighton was once again following the same script from their last few weeks. It wasn't the most fun watch of all time. It wasn't the best watch of all time, but they got the job done.
They saw a few players return as well, which was really good to watch. However, there were a few moments where Arsenal did not look that convincing, and that's happened a lot in the last few weeks.
They have had a few moments where they sort of lose control or lose focus on the game. Luckily, they have been focused just about enough to get those results.
However, things do need to improve, and they need to improve as quickly as possible. The attack has been a problem all season, but the defence has been the one saving grace for this Arsenal team.
William Saliba whispered what Arsenal fans already know about their defense
They did look much better with Gabriel Magalhaes' return, but there were a few moments where they looked a bit sloppy, and that's something that has to change.
In fact, there was one point during the game where William Saliba said something to Gabriel in French that translated to, "we are not mean enough," in English.
And that's one thing that they are not really good at. I think Arsenal players are really gritty, and they are really, really hardworking. But the one thing that they lack is that sort of intimidation from the defenders. And I think that's what Saliba was alluding to.
Gabriel brings a lot of that when he plays, but I don't think it is enough, especially against players who consistently rile them up. And it prevents them from really setting the tone of the game in their third of the pitch.
That is one thing that Arsenal can potentially improve on, but I do understand why they don't. It's not something you can just improve.
It's also the personality of the players and how they process the rules of the game. So it is really important to think about that as well.
It is the mental side of things and how they are as people, which makes this very difficult to bring in.
But it is not impossible. They can enforce these things more often. But judging the state of refereeing in English football, and in football in general, I don't think they're going to test it out as much as they would like to.
Just because they don't want to get in trouble, they don't want their team to be in a bad position just because they want it to be more aggressive or "mean."
To be honest, Arsenal's defense is still really good. They're still by far the best defensive team in the world.
So, you don't have too much to complain about if you're at the top of the Premier League table and the Champions League table, which Arsenal are. But these things should be fixed soon.
