After one of England’s worst ever showings at the 2014 World Cup, no doubt they were looking to force that experience out of their memories and reestablish themselves as a powerhouse in Europe. Their first test came against Norway in the first international friendly since their early ousting in Brazil.

A record low showed up to support England at Wembley, and it came dangerously close to being another huge disappointment.

But first, the Gunners.

Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both started the game, Wilshere at left midfield and the Ox on the right wing. They were both incredibly active early on and it made me wonder where this passion was against Leicester City. Then I remembered that they were both on the bench.

But both looked good, they created attacks, played some really good balls, and Ox just missed out on an assist from a slick cross. Naturally, the two Gunners combined for nearly half of England’s fouls drawn. Equally naturally, each time they hit the dirt, Gunner nation held their breath. They made a good showing though, and were free to exit in peace when Rooney punched in a penalty to the relief of Roy Hodgson, who desperately needed a win.

Wilshere had been served a lot of praise by Hodgson going into the match and he really impressed, giving England a taste of what he can truly become.

Danny Welbeck was subbed on for Wayne Rooney directly following the penalty conversion in the 70th minute. He showed his pace and technical ability with some nifty runs. He also put England’s only shot on goal that wasn’t a penalty, actually requiring a save from Nyland. I, for one, cannot wait to see this ability put to use at the Emirates come September 13th.

Calum Chambers came on in the 81st minute for his first ever senior appearance. He didn’t play much, given just 9+ minutes of time, but it’s a big day for anyone when they can feature for their home country, especially at the young age of 19.

It wasn’t a pretty game for England. They couldn’t put any attempts on net and at times they looked downright baffling. But on the bright side, the Gunners put up a good showing, so we got that going for us. Next up, England face a much tougher task in Switzerland. While I’m obviously rooting to see the Gunners make an impact, I’m picking the Swiss in that one.
