Arsenal need to strengthen in a number of areas if they are to finally end their Premier League trophy drought. One are that is of dire need is center half. Could Everton’s promising youngster John Stones be a possibility for the Gunners?

Arsenal have needed a commanding, strong, dominating center half since the departure of Sol Campbell and downturn in form of Kolo Toure. It has been a huge weakness of this team, and while Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have created a solid relationship over the past few seasons, Arsenal certainly have suffered, especially in big games, due to a weakness at this vital position.

It has often been a gripe of Wenger’s management that he is unable to build a defensively competent unit. His footballing philosophy dictates an attacking style of play; a possession based, attractive style which often is employed at the expense of great defensive frailties.

The Gunners have been exposed over the past few years against teams like Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool when they are bombarded by high octane, fast paced football, something that neither Mertesacker or Koscielny are comfortable in dealing with.

The two have developed into a complimentary pair at the position, however, the third center back in the squad, Gabriel Paulista has been pushing for a starting role in the last few months of last season. Consequently, Arsenal head into next year with three possible starting center halves. However, while Koscielny is certainly the best of these, none are truly world class and the future at the position is far from clear.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Someone who could solve both issues is Everton defender John Stones. The England international has absolutely insane potential. He is good in the air, quick across the ground, positionally sound and reads the game with a much older head than his 22 years portray. He does suffer from lapses in concentration and can be caught out from crosses in wide areas. However, at such a young age he possesses all the physical, technical and mental tools to play at the very top level for over a decade.

Arsenal legend Robert Pires agrees with such an assessment of Stones, stating:

"“Arsenal need English players, the Premier League is very physical. Stones would be a good player for Arsenal. Can you imagine Stones and Koscielny at the back? It would be a good defense”"

Pires is spot on when he states that Stones would be a good player for the Gunners to bring. While he would be an expensive addition, potentially costing well above £40 million, a figure that is astronomical for a young center half. However, if Stones did come to the Emirates and progressed to anchor the Arsenal defense for years to come, then suddenly such an initially steep price seems much more reasonable.

There seems to be no reason that Arsenal would not be interested in Stones. Young, talented and English, there is little for the Gunners not to like, and while there is a lack of reports surrounding such a potential signing, do not be surprised if Arsene Wenger ups his pursuit of the touted superstar over the coming months.
