Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham: Player Ratings
Arsenal came back from a 1-0 deficit to take a point from the clash with their North London rivals. The match at the Emirates enjoyed periods of end-to-end football, though Arsenal will likely rue taking just a point from a game where they dominated possession and set pieces so thoroughly. Here are your player ratings:
Szczesny: 7.7
Did well to deal with a couple speculative shots, but there was little to be done on the goal as his defence failed in front of him and it was an unfortunately tidy finish.
Chambers: 7.8
The kid hung in well in the crucible that is a North London Derby, and his influence grew as the game went on. Booked later on, which is becoming a bit of a trend for him. Needs to pick when the right time is to challenge. Two scintillating strikes at goal buys him a little goodwill back.
Mertesacker: 7.6
Speed was exposed a couple times, but was brutally unlucky not to score on a great header to the lower corner. Looked frustrated as he lurked near the back post during the barrages of Arsenal corners.
Koscielny: 8.3 – MAN OF THE MATCH
Moved through his area wonderfully, making a couple critical challenges near the touchline and killed a counter-attack in the dying embers of the match. Looks a brick wall when in form.
Gibbs: 7.4
Dangerous at times, but he’ll be unhappy with some of his balls in. Normally a reliable delivery system, it wasn’t there for him today. Did what he’s paid to do and that’s defend.
Arteta: 7.6
Really unfortunate he had to depart, as he was at his metronomic best through the opening thirty minutes, enjoying a 100% passing percentage and distributing well to Ramsey and Wilshere.
Ramsey: 6.8
A prescient call to sit Aaron Ramsey has real weight after seeing his performance against Tottenham, ending with him exiting with what is likely a hamstring injury. His decision-making has regressed, which almost always speaks to players trying to do too much. Arsenal could have done without him for this match, as big as derbies are.
Wilshere: 7.2
Didn’t exert influence as he’s capable of doing, but was the spark plug for Arsenal in the first half. Came off after an hour and delivered two key passes in the match, but the real story is his right ankle which suffered a rather nasty turn.
Ozil: 7.5
Started on the left again, prompting a great deal of vitriol from fans. Was effective throughout the match and helped coordinate attacks on that flank in the final minutes. If there’s one fair criticism to be leveled at him today, it’s the sometimes suspect crossing.
Oxlade-Chamberlain: 8.2
Very nearly earned himself a “Man of the Match” award for the equalizer and his rampaging down the right flank. Should a rest be on the cards for Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain should be the one to fill the void.
Welbeck: 7.6
There should be no doubt on this point: Arsenal are lucky to have this player in the squad. While the incredible passing statistics displayed against Southampton turned rather sharply south, he’s an intelligent threat in the final third and has the ability to fire from the edge of the box, forcing defenders to commit a step or two sooner.
Flamini: 6.0
He’s brash and has a bad attitude (in a good way). But should Arteta miss time, Diaby must be played instead. Dawdled on the ball in a dangerous area and it gifted a simple sequence to the opposition to open the scoring. Inexusable.
Cazorla: 8.0
The little Spaniard was wonderful coming on, even throughout physical play in the middle of the pitch. Slapped a wonderful ball into traffic in the box that was destined for Welbeck’s foot before great defending knocked it away. High energy, and highly effective on the left.
Alexis: 6.7
The manager will draw flak for not starting him and it may be justified, but in his work on the pitch today he didn’t exactly sparkle. Looked off the pace, catching the ball under his feet a couple times and playing unnecessarily risky passes (more than usual) at times of burgeoning pressure.
