Could Alex Song’s Recent Performances Mean Arsene Was Wrong Again?
The big transfer rumour of the summer was undoubtedly where Fabregas would end up, and the apparent refusal by Arsene Wenger to resign the Spanish midfielder to the side he used to captain. But even if that is true the only benefit, in my eyes, to signing Fabregas would have been to stop anyone else having him. We struggle to play all our attacking midfield options anyway, so why add to that issue? However I think that the potential loss of Alex Song, to neighbours West Ham, could prove to be just as big a mistake.

If you watched the early kick-off on Saturday then you would have seen the East Londoners proving they are a real force this season with a decent 2-1 win over Manchester City. They stood their ground for longer than Arsenal did against City and seemed far more in control of the match, and I think this was down to their more combative central midfield, headed up by former Gunner Alex Song. Song was apparently offered around Europe’s top clubs before Sam Allardyce made his move for the midfielder, so did we all miss a trick?
Alex Song played as the most defensive of the West Ham midfield four and shone throughout the match against City, being named man-of-the-match by both the TV coverage and the West Ham fans. He stifled Toure’s midfield runs and cut out any supply that David Silva might have been able to get through to Agureo and Dzeko up front.
But it was not just the defensive work that he did so well, but the work rate and the invention he showed in getting forward and creating chances once he had the ball was second to none. He would have showed Wilshere and Flamini exactly how to control the midfield with seeming ease, and use the ball sensibly when the opposition’s attacks had been dismantled.
He even had the confidence to try this outrageous Rabona in the opposition box, almost setting up a chance for another West Ham goal:
In short I think Alex Song would have been perfect at Arsenal this season, even only on the year long loan deal that currently see’s him at the Boleyn Ground. However it does have to be said that if Alex Song doesn’t fancy playing, he will not play. He is not known for his relentless work if things are going against him, but I think he would have done a good job for us. what do you guys think?
