Do Arsenal Suddenly Need Another Striker?
By Josh Sippie
I’ve been dismissing all the links to potential striker transfer targets since Arsenal signed Danny Welbeck, but now that the young Englishman is struggling, I’m beginning to second guess myself. Most of the top clubs out there have three legitimate strikers. Look at Barcelona, Real Madrid, even Manchester City (who actually have 8 strikers, I believe).
But Arsenal don’t. At least not technically.
Welbeck is currently our sole striker, with Lukas Podolski not really being used except for late into the game. Granted, Olivier Giroud is coming back sooner than we expected, I’m still wondering if another striker wouldn’t be beneficial.

I’m holding some bizarre hope for Edinson Cavani to come to town. I’d also sell all non-essential organs for Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Lionel Messi, but that’s not really a valid point. Andre-Pierre Gignac’s internal boxing match has me a bit turned off as well.
So who is a possibility for the Gunners? We know Giroud can struggle and we see that Welbeck can be inconsistent as well, so would it really be such a bad move to splash the pot for Cavani? Having a consistent striking option would be something we haven’t felt since Robin van Persie took the money and fled to Manchester United, where he fell into a crowded line of strikers who continuously under-perform (but I digress).
But what did van Persie bring to the team? Consistency.
Sure, we were overly dependent on him, but we were short on money and couldn’t hold on to players. That wouldn’t happen this time around. With Alexis, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, the Ox and more all proving to be formidable forces, Arsenal would not find themselves dependant on whoever they may venture to sign to play up front.
I don’t think Arsene Wenger will sign a striker (rumor has it Abou Diaby is due back, after all), especially given his lack of signing a defender or holding midfielder in August (Abou Diaby was due back, after all), but as an Arsenal fan who’s currently desperate given the state of the team, it’s okay to dream a little.
So here’s to Edinson Cavani becoming a Gunner!
