Chelsea’s Petr Cech to Arsenal; Believable or Not?
By Josh Sippie
Petr Cech was Chelsea. He was the anchor of the team and felt like an irreplaceable piece of a well-oiled machine. And then he got old and Thibaut Coutois turned out to be a 6’6″ version of Spiderman. Who knew?
Unfortunately for the 32-year old Cech, that leaves him without a net of his own to protect.
Cech is no doubt a talented keeper and deserving of a first team role. With his family now rooted in London, it would make sense for him to stay in the English capital. But Arsenal?
I don’t buy this one bit.

7 million pounds for a keeper of Cech’s quality is a bargain of epic proportions, but what business does Arsene Wenger have pursuing him? David Ospina is out for another two months, and while I don’t foresee the need to use Emiliano Martinez, he is able to fill in for a couple months of watching our Polish keeper rather than Wenger spending a chunk of his tiny January budget on a commodity we don’t need.
Wojciech Szczesny is our keeper. He’s one of the best in Europe. Ospina provides plenty of competition as he will continue to do when he’s healthy.
Not only that, but it’s Jose Mourinho. If it was up to me, I’d never do business with him, nor do I think he’d prefer to ever do business with Arsene Wenger. Plus, Cech has called Chelsea his home for what seems like an eternity. I don’t think he would be so quick to pack up and go to a direct rival.
I, for one, hope this doesn’t happen. We don’t need a keeper, and with such a limited budget, every single cent is precious to hold on to for what we do need (defense).
