Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Yohan Cabaye NOT What Arsenal Needs

facebooktwitterreddit

I understand that rumors can emerge seemingly out of nothing, but here we have another rumor that I just don’t see the logic in. Yohan Cabaye is a skilled individual, no one is doubting that. But he plays the one position where Arsenal have an abundance at, both now and in the future.

Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Falmini and Mesut Ozil all play central midfield. They aren’t holding midfielders. Yohan Cabaye plays central midfield. He’s not a holding midfielder. So why are we even rumored to be in talks with him? He solves none of Arsenal’s current dilemma and the only thing he has that appeals to Arsene Wenger is that he’s French.

More from Arsenal Transfer Rumours

It’s been established that Cabaye will be returning to the Premier League after leaving Newcastle for PSG not so long ago, but despite his nationality, I cannot see what Arsenal want in him.

Yes, our midfield is incredibly injury prone. But so is our defense, and even aside from the injury proneness, our defense is still incredibly thin. Any and all available funds should be routed towards defense. Anything spent on strikers, wingers, attacking midfielders or the like is wasted money and should be met with scorn and disdain.

We don’t need Pedro. We don’t need Andre-Pierre Gignac. We don’t need Cabaye.

We need a defender. A quality defender who can match the effectiveness of Per Mertesacker, Laurent Kocielny, Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Debuchy. That back four is a stoic back four, but between injuries and an excess of matches, they cannot play every game. We are incredibly thin outside of those four. Calum Chambers has been playing majestically, he’s one cover, but he’s young and he’s prone to mistakes.

Please, Arsene Wenger, please swallow your pride and nab us a defenseman or two. Maybe a holding midfielder. It’s all I want for Christmas.
