Arsenal vs Swansea: The History Between The Clubs

You will not find many clubs out there with positive records against Arsenal. Especially teams that have touched the fourth tier of English football. But Swansea City is that anomaly. With Arsenal facing Swansea on Saturday, it is time to get educated regarding the history these two teams have.

There are two teams in the top tier of Premier League football that the Swans handle very well. Those two teams are Arsenal and Manchester United. Against United, the Swans have won four of their last five and have won 10 of 26 matches against the Red Devils, sharing five.

Against Arsenal, the Swans are even better. Swansea have won seven, shared two and lost six against Arsenal, netting 21 goals and surrendering just 18. Strangely enough, Arsenal have dropped three of six at home and shared one (via worldfootball).

The Swans have won four of their last seven against Arsenal, drawing one and surrendering just two losses.

Of course, the most recent match up with the Swans should not be too far removed from our memories. It was May 11 of 2015. With Arsenal riding a huge momentum wave and an 11 game unbeaten streak, the Swans came to town and grinded out a most improbable win, with this “goal” being the clincher:

Nothing quite like being beaten by technology.

With all that now ingrained in your brain, let’s talk about what side stories to watch for in the game. Lukasz Fabianski will be facing his old side yet again. The Polish keeper was a perennial back up keeper for the Gunners from 2007-2014. He made just 32 appearances for the club before seeking his fortunes elsewhere. While at Arsenal, his unsteady hands earned him the less-than-flattering nickname of “Lukasz Flappy-Hands-Ski”.

However, since joining the Swans, the Pole in goal has actually been rather good. Many even began to claim that Arsenal had gotten rid of the wrong Polish keeper when Wojciech Szczesny was imploding on New Years day circa 2015.

The other side story has been erased by the injury to Aaron Ramsey. Given Ramsey’s Welsh origins and affinity to Cardiff City, Swansea take exception to his very existence. With Cardiff City being their direct rivals, the Swans take it upon themselves to berate any man who has ever been associated with the club, right down to the peanut vendors and parking attendants.

Had Ramsey been healthy, he would have been welcoming a pleasant stream of boos into his ear canals. However, we will not have to worry about that barrage now.
