17. Eddie Hapgood

Of all the wonderful eras in Arsenal history, one of the greatest was during the 1930s under Herbert Chapman. Left back, Eddie Hapgood was an essential aspect of the team’s success. Signed in 1927, Hapgood was at the center of everything good during the all-conquering ’30s side. A leader on the field, Hapgood’s battle-hardened aggressive nature made him a formidable defender, a fierce competitor, and most importantly, a serial winner.

Hapgood didn’t make the left back position his own until 1929, but for the next ten years until WWII broke out, he never played less than 35 games in a season. His longevity is surpassed only by his elegance in both defending and attacking. He was aggressive in the tackle, positionally unruffled and offensively dangerous throughout his tenure at Highbury.

He became captain of the side in 1937, succeeding Alex James, and led the side to another title in his first season as captain. All in all, Hapgood was instrumental in Arsenal’s five league titles and two FA Cups during the dominant decade. Hapgood’s career spanned 17 years for the Gunners, playing 440 games. A center-piece of a winning team, Hapgood was a model professional, and his greatness in Arsenal circles is very rarely doubted.
