18. Bob Wilson

A true gentleman of football, Bob Wilson is the first goalkeeper on this list. Playing during Bertie Mee’s tenure at Highbury, Wilson was ever-present between the sticks, helping Arsenal to the Fairs Cup in 1970 and then to the league and cup double the season after.

Wilson signed with Arsenal in 1963 but did not break into the starting XI until 1968, supporting Jim Furnell throughout his first years at Highbury. However, after Furnell’s form dropped in the later half of the 1968 season, culminating in a horrible mistake in the FA Cup against Birmingham City, Wilson was instated as the first choice goalkeeper, a position he held for many years to come.

More from Arsenal All-Time Lists

Wilson won his first trophy in 1970, but his most impressive season was the double winning year in 1971. Known for his gung-ho style, Wilson was an expert in one-on-one situations, throwing himself at the feet of opposing strikers. He was utterly stupendous during the 70/71 season, and in one of the greatest seasons in Arsenal history, with some wonderful outfield players, it was Wilson who was named Arsenal’s Player of the Season. That is a ridiculous accomplishment for any keeper and displays Wilson’s great talent.

A true fan favorite, Wilson retired early at the age of 32 after the 1974 season. However, his loyalty to the Gunners resulted in a new role of goalkeeping coach, tutoring the likes of Pat Jennings and David Seaman. Wilson retired from the coaching role after the 2003 season but is one of only two Arsenal legends (the other being Pat Rice) to have been involved in all three double winning seasons.
